Locals talk about the Gaylord tornado and its impact on the northern Michigan community

GAYLORD, Mich. – Residents talk about the homes and businesses that were destroyed after a tornado swept through Gaylord, Michigan.

“He was on the ground for two miles,” a Gaylord resident said.

Culver manager Jayme Elya said she saw the tornado destroy the Hobby Lobby off M-32.

A woman was injured due to debris at the Culvers. The woman fell outside the window of the Culver as the tornado passed.

It had metal and glass that nicked it.

Michigan State Police and Mayor Sharrad say the tornado first struck in a mobile home park and continued for about two to three miles through the Gaylord Commercial Corridor.

“I would say he was on the ground for about two miles,” the mayor of Gaylord Sharrad said. “It wiped out a Hobby Lobby, Jimmy Johns, Quick Lube in our west end of town, then it came to town and wiped out a lot of houses.”

Rescue efforts were fully effective as ambulances drove back and forth. The cleanup is underway and Local 4 has seen a few MDOT trucks are also driving in town.
