Michigan community gears up for massive annual cancer fundraiser

The Arrows take on Mona Shores in the 13th On Your Sidelines Game of the Week, but it’s also one of the region’s biggest cancer fundraisers.

LOWELL, Michigan – The temperature hovers around 90 degrees. The sun is beating down on the Red Arrow stadium. The heat is brutal. But the organizers of Lowell’s Pink Arrow Pride don’t matter. They have a job to do and they are committing to it.

“It’s usually a year round thing – getting the sponsors, getting the t-shirts, taking care of everything,” said Ginger Noll, president of Lowell Athletic Boosters.

“There are so many people behind the scenes, in front of the stages, everywhere, working to organize this event. Everyone deserves to be recognized. The guy driving the forklift behind me is one of the spearheads. – Perry Beachum. “

Beachum loads pallets of bottled water for participants. All the work, these volunteers say, is worth it because they know they are helping the fight against cancer. Since the event started in 2009, Pink Arrow Pride has raised thousands of dollars.

“If you are having cancer treatments you fill out a simple form and they will give you money for gasoline so you can come and go to your treatments. The money goes to Gilda so the counseling sessions are free. All the money we try to stay in the Lowell community. “

This year things will be a little different. Due to staff and supply shortages there will be no “restaurant row” this year. And Beachum says attendees are encouraged to wear masks at the game out of respect for people traveling with cancer who have compromised immune systems.

Noll hopes Pink Arrow Pride will inspire other communities to join the fight against cancer as well.

“There are a lot of things you can do to help your cancer survivor. Anything you can do. This is what Lowell does, but anyone in any community can do anything. “she said.

The Pink Arrow Pride match between Lowell and Mona Shores is also the first 13 On Your Sidelines Game of the Week.
