Fenton’s Phil Knight and Birmingham’s Hugh Mahler were among the 10 recipients of the 2020/2021 COVID-19 Governor’s Service Awards, according to a press release from the Michigan Community Service Commission.
The awards recognize contributions made through volunteerism, service and philanthropy throughout Michigan. This year’s winners will be honored for their commitment to their communities during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The 10 individuals who received the Governor’s Service Awards this year have helped strengthen our
communities by feeding families, administering vaccines, supporting local businesses, mentoring
young people, and much more. We must strive to live up to the example they set and
keep helping each other because tough times don’t last, but tough people do,” Governor Gretchen Whitmer said.
Knight is executive director of the Food Bank Council of Michigan, the state association responsible for seven Feeding America food banks that serve Michigan’s 83 counties.
During the pandemic, the number of food-insecure Michiganders rose from 1.3 million to nearly 2 million, with many children and seniors affected, according to the news release.
Knight sought partnerships, funding and food, enabling the Food Bank Board to provide 47% more food.
In addition to being director of the Food Bank Council, Knight is also chairman of the Governor’s Food Security Council and the University of Michigan Kidney Cancer Research Team, along with his wife, Christy, a survivor of kidney cancer. kidney.
Mahler volunteers with Forgotten Harvest, a food rescue organization serving Southeast Michigan.
After retiring from his professional career as a business owner, Mahler volunteered at Forgotten Harvest packing meals for recipients. He assisted with data entry, food agency visits, food rescues, volunteer leadership, and helped in the warehouse.
