Michigan community troubled by possible cat killer

ALLEGAN, Mich. – Residents of a western Michigan community reported on social media that several cats were found killed in their town – sparking rumors of a cat killer.

Members of the Allegan community say several cats have been found mutilated in recent weeks, according to WWMT.

Melissa Gilbert, manager of a Shell gas station in Allegan, told WWMT that a man found the body of a mutilated cat in a bag as he searched the dumpster for cans and bottles.

“There are no cameras outside to do a visual that did that. There was nothing they could do to help us,” Gilbert told WWMT.

Residents took to Allegan Informed’s Facebook page, reporting that this was not the only incident of a mutilated cat in the community.

Allegan police say they have had no reports of an incident related to the cats, but Gilbert says police have not taken a report.

“I think it’s because we have no way of knowing who did it, and maybe there’s not much they can do,” Gilbert said. “I find it absurd for someone to do this to an animal. It is not fair.”

Killing or torturing an animal is a felony in Michigan and carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, a fine of $ 5,000 and up to 500 hours of community service.
