The following is a public statement from Pino D. Colone, MD, president of the Michigan State Medical Society, in response to President Joe Biden’s announcement Thursday of new federal Covid vaccine requirements for public and private employers.

“The medical community has only had one message since the approval of the Covid 19 vaccine earlier this year: getting vaccinated is the most important thing a person can do to protect themselves, protect those they she loves and help end this pandemic.

“We hope Thursday’s announcement will lead more people to get vaccinated and encourage those who have questions about the vaccine and who have so far been reluctant to be vaccinated against Covid 19 to contact their doctor and ask all the questions they have.

“The medical community has learned a lot about Covid 19, how to treat it and how to prevent it. It is our duty to share this information with our patients and to help them make good decisions concerning their health and that of those around them.

“Whether the vaccine is compulsory or not, it is safe and effective. Getting it is the best thing a person can do to survive Covid 19. “
