Michigan State Representative Andrea Schroeder Dies of Stomach Cancer

State Representative Andrea Schroeder, 57, has died of a recurrence of stomach cancer, House Speaker Jason Wentworth said on Friday.

Schroeder, Township of R-Independence, was serving her second term and announced on September 14 that she was undergoing treatment for recurrent cancer. She was the majority whip of the Republican House caucus.

Schroeder was initially diagnosed with stomach cancer in August 2018, shortly after winning a primary election in the 43rd District which covers part of Oakland County. She underwent a total gastrectomy in 2019 and continued to serve as a state representative, winning her re-election to seat in 2020.

In a statement, Wentworth said that even during the worst days of her illness, Schroeder “was a tireless and selfless friend who always put the needs of others before her own.”

“When we were all worried about her health and comfort, she was more concerned with helping the people she represented who had called into the office, finding out what was going on in each of our lives, sharing the latest news from her children. , working with the close staff she cared about so much and helping everyone around her succeed with their own personal priorities, ”he said.

“That’s who she was as a person from the start, and that’s exactly how I’ll remember her,” Wentworth continued.

Other lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have praised Schroeder’s passion for his work and his community.

“Cancer is a terrible disease and it does not spare the right people like Representative Schroeder,” Democratic House Leader Donna Lasinski of D-Scio Township said in a statement. “She was passionate about the importance of public service because she continued to do people’s jobs until her last days.”

Schroeder is a former teacher and also owned a consulting business, according to her House biography. Prior to working in the Legislative Assembly, she served on the Board of Directors of the Township of Independence.
