Mid Michigan Community College Awards Eight Full Scholarships

Mid Michigan Community College awarded competitive full scholarships to eight area high school students.

Laker Distinction (LD) scholarships are offered at two award levels, with four of each being passed on. The traditional level of the scholarship provides 31 credits of tuition and fees. The LD Presidential Scholarships, the highest awards, include 62 credits (equivalent to an associate degree) worth of tuition and fees. The LD Presidential Scholarship is renewable and includes a $500/semester stipend for books and school supplies.

The recipients of the 2014 Presidential Laker Distinction Scholarship (two years) are:

• Katlin Kindel, Ithaca High School

• Tara Pummell, Clare Secondary School

• Shayann Richardson, McBain High School

• Nicole Solomon, Beaverton High School

The recipients of the 2014 Laker Distinction Scholarship (one year) are:

• Malinda Hershberger, Clare Secondary School

• Emily Branigan, Shepherd High School

• Vanessa Waldron, Ithaca High School

• Travis Walton, Clare High School

To be eligible for the LD scholarships, applicants must be Michigan high school students with a 3.5 GPA or better. The selection for the 2014 scholarships took place over two months and applicants attended two events at the MMCC as they progressed through the process. Final decisions were based on the candidates’ leadership, service and academic performance, which were assessed using various measures. Students submitted creative responses, wrote answers to on-campus essays, and, for those moving on to the final round of selection, underwent a series of short interviews with MMCC staff.

“We know that many of these high caliber students see MMCC as a gateway to their future educations, so we took the selection process very seriously,” said Brent Mishler, MMCC Associate Director of Admissions. “We wanted to make sure the exam was unbiased, fair and took into account the range of students’ abilities – we really wanted the chance to get to know the candidates as much as possible.”
