Talks to strategically reopen parts of Michigan’s economy are underway

(4/15/2020) – As Michigan coronavirus cases appear to be leveling off, plans to possibly reopen the state’s economy are underway.

“There is a realistic hope that we can get back to some sense of normalcy and then continue to build on that,” Senate Minority Leader Jim Ananich said.

This is refreshing news for a state with over a million workers fighting for unemployment benefits.

Growing frustration swept through the streets of Lansing on Wednesday, with protesters complaining that Governor Whitmer’s stay-at-home order is crippling their businesses.

Ananich says there is a way to make sure this is done in a logical way that protects people.

“I can tell you, I think the last thing people want is for us to open prematurely, thinking it’s okay, forcing people back to the workplace, and then we see an increase, and we close again. To close, to open close, to close, to open is a terrible idea, “said Ananich.

States like New York and Washington are working with neighboring states in their respective regions to reopen the economy.

Here in the Midwest it’s no different, and at first it may not seem normal.

“Before, you had a certain number of capacities in a restaurant or a store. That number must be less. You must make sure that the employees have masks, gloves, opportunities to take breaks. Customers entering do so. also… the same thing and then you expand it and loosen it up over time, ”Ananich said.

Going forward, Ananich says we’ll have to depend on public health experts, as we continue rigorous testing and protect worker safety, so all Michiganders have confidence back in the workplace.

“I think we’re starting to understand all aspects of this virus and that will make it easier. Once we have all this information and data, working with different industries, workers, unions and other groups, we can find the safest way to do it, ”Ananich said.

Ananich says he doesn’t see large gatherings like sporting events, concerts and plays making a comeback anytime soon. In the near future, however, he may see a number of companies making a comeback with new guidelines put in place.
